The nature of the mental health trust’s work, and the patients they care for, means that their fire doors need to meet specific legislation and building regulations to protect patients and staff.

Within mental health settings, the need for doors to be fire retardant runs alongside the need for the doors to be secure to protect patients and staff, day-to-day. In recognition of the fact that every facility needs a unique solution, PWIDF worked closely with the mental health trust client to ensure that the new doors enhanced the facility’s security, while safeguarding both staff and patients.

For this particular mental health ward, which specialises in caring for acute and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) inpatients, PWIDF replaced eight doors in the reception area with doors designed with input from the client and its clinical staff, and upgraded the existing doors with stronger frames and units. The new doors were purpose built, designed to meet the specialist challenges of that particular ward.
