A Collaborative Approach
PWIDF recently collaborated with Red Tree Building Contractors on a fantastic refurbishment project for Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Working closely with the NHS Trust, we developed a robust specification tailored to the unique demands of the mental health sector. Through a highly collaborative process and multiple visits to site, we engineered a suite of adaptable door types which fulfilled the exacting standards required by the NHS Trust, healthcare professionals and patients.
Thoughtful Design
The doors were crafted with sustainably sourced ash and oak timber which not only provide strength and durability, but also create a warmer, more homely environment within the wards. The carefully considered colour palette created a well-designed space, while providing a harmonious environment for the specific emotional needs of patients. The incorporation of large, full-length glass screens into the doors significantly improved both light flow and visibility, enhancing the overall atmosphere for both patients and staff.
Dave Stewart, CEO of Safehinge Primera said:
“At Safehinge Primera, we believe the best outcomes come from true collaboration—and this project with PWIDF, Red Tree, and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust is a perfect example. By combining our ligature-resistant expertise with PWIDF’s deep understanding of fire door manufacturing, we’ve helped create a safer, more therapeutic environment.“

Reliable Supply
A key aspect of the project was providing a reliable and robust supply chain. The timber was supplied by our sister company, Mon Timber, to manage costs and ensure consistent quality throughout. Door component manufacturer and specialists in mental health, Safehinge Primera worked in collaboration with us to guarantee a consistent supply of the highest quality ligature resistant components. Through our strategic partnerships, and by listening carefully to the needs of the Greater Manchester NHS Trust, we formed a strong supply chain to ensure that the specialist requirements demanded by the project were met.
Outcome
This project successfully delivered a comprehensive specialist door package, tailored to the specific needs of the mental healthcare environment. The result is a secure, safe and aesthetically thoughtful space that blends functionality with the wellbeing of patients and staff.
