Kier appointed HD Carpentry to undertake the project, who turned to local timber specialist Mon Timber to supply the project with their locally sourced, on-site materials. This included home grown larch cladding that was machined by Premier Forest Products in Haverfordwest. The choice of using home grown wood, rather than imported, was crucial to the community of Magor and Undy for their project, which was completed over six weeks.
The home-grown larch was used for the building’s external cladding, resulting in a clean, attractive finish.
Ben Hadley at HD Carpentry said: “In keeping with the wishes of the Magor and Undy community, sourcing local products for the construction of the hub was one of our main priorities. Not only was it the preferred choice, but the selection of Mon Timber’s home-grown larch cladding also provided a more cost-effective, carbon-conscious solution, which could allow the hub to develop in other areas.”
Paul Richards, Sales Executive at Mon Timber said “It’s great to see our products being used to support the local community. The importance of the Magor and Undy Community Hub to local residents is clear to see from the hard work that has been put in by the community over the years. To be able to see their vision from 1970 come to life with our supplies was a real privilege.”
