Sarah Jenkins

Sarah Jenkins, an Admin Clerk at the Newport branch of Timber Importers Premier Forest Products, has just enrolled on a shipping course in a bid to steer her career in a new direction, and bring her closer to an ambition of becoming Premier's first female shipping manager - and the first female shipping manager in Wales.

Ambitious Sarah, 26, has been with Premier for five and a half years, and will embark on the nine-month distance learning shipping course this Summer.  She will be studying alongside continuing her usual job at Premier.

Sarah decided to undertake an Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) Shipping qualification following discussions at her annual performance appraisal.  Sarah realised that whilst she enjoyed her current role and working at Premier, she wanted her career to develop in a different direction, and it was suggested that she try for the ICS' Understanding Shipping qualification.  With funding agreed by Premier, Sarah is now looking forward to returning to study and starting the course in a few weeks time.

The course includes the study of shipping vessels, global shipping patterns, and modules on chartering and ports and cargoes.

Sarah said: "I am looking forward to starting the course and learning about the shipping industry and its relation to the timber industry. This course will open up new career opportunities for me – and in a few years I may even make history by becoming the first female shipping manager in Wales!"

Dilwyn Howells, one of the Directors at Premier, said: "It is great as an employer to be able to develop staff in a way that will benefit them and the company in the long-term.  Sarah is an enthusiastic, able member of staff and we are pleased to be able to assist her career aspirations and keep talented people like her within Premier."
