Premier Lay Down Roots in London

Leading Wales-based timber importer Premier Forest Products is building on its highly successful business by expanding into the UK’s capital city with their fully certified product offering.

The 2012 Olympics is setting the agenda for green construction in London, with the organisers having stated that they will "maximise timber from sustainable resources with all timber used from known, legal sources, with clear supply chain evidence".

Premier, which is based in Newport, is winning over competition in the region with their wide range of certified plywoods and softwoods.
These products include Greentree - a high quality FSC® certified plywood sourced from responsibly managed forests in South America; 100 per cent PEFC certified German timber, and high quality, good value West Canadian timber.

Nigel Williams, Director at Premier, said:

"Sustainable construction is at the forefront of the industry’s mind at the moment, especially in London, with The Olympic Delivery Authority’s stated strategy that the London 2012 Games should be the "Greenest Games in Modern Times".

"In construction terms, timber is the most environmentally sustainable material, and at Premier, we ensure that all the products we supply are available with full certification, from sustainable resources and it is our policy not to charge our customers any extra premium for this. This is part of what makes Premier stand out from the competition, and we are proud of this commitment."

Premier now has a dedicated sales team that are focussed on promoting the Premier brand in London and the South East. The team includes Dean Rolls, Mark Hearn and Steve Rawlings, and due to the growing interest in their products the company has devoted more resources to concentrate on handling the increasing activity in the region.

Dean Rolls, one of Premier’s sales executives for the South East, said that so far the success in London has been extremely encouraging:

"Early last year, sales were hitting the £1 million mark in London and the South East and by December 2007, this figure had reached £6 million. Although this is only a small proportion of Premier’s overall sales, it has been a very positive start. There has been a significant growth in sales of our commodity products, such as the hardwood and softwood plywood range, along with specialist products such as birch.

"Premier has a rare offering in that, unlike most timber suppliers, we can provide a good mix of both panel and softwood products from the same location, at the best quality and certified by the appropriate bodies to guarantee that supply chain source."

In addition to the company’s recent appointment as an approved supplier to the H&B Group, joining a small, select list of timber importers, Premier is also a nominated supplier to the merchant buying groups CBA and LIMA and has been approached for further discussions by NBG and others. Premier recently won a contract to become the sole supplier of panel products to a large independent merchant group in the region, a significant achievement for the London team.

Dean Rolls continued:

"As we build our business and reputation in the South East, we are able to offer our clients more and more for their money. For example, due to the large volume of orders we now receive, we can provide a nominated day delivery service for all orders.

"With the 2012 London Olympics fast approaching, the awareness of the need to use sustainable materials in construction is at a peak, and this can only be beneficial to our expansion efforts.

"Our aim for the coming year is to continue to build on the significant growth we have seen so far, develop ongoing customer partnerships and further raise the awareness of the Premier brand. Ultimately, once the business has reached a certain level, we aim to set up a stocking location within the South East."

Premier’s commitment to the environment is reflected by the fact they can supply FSC certified products under their certificate TT-COC-002162 and PEFC certified products under their certificate BMT-PEFC-0236.
